Mahjong Garden To Go is a project that perfectly reflects the other side of the coin of mid-2000s casual games. While some developers were betting on complex storylines, this game was created as a pure, untainted means of relaxation. It didn’t try to tell a story, but instead offered the player a digital oasis where one could escape from reality for a few minutes during a lunch break.

At its core, this game is the most classic mahjong solitaire, where the player simply had to clear the board of tiles. However, the game offered more than just one standard mode. For those who wanted to play the old-fashioned way, there was the Traditional mode. For those seeking a bit more tactical depth, the Garden mode was conceived, featuring “free cells” where one could temporarily set aside a single obstructing tile – a mechanic familiar to everyone from “Solitaire”. The most interesting and unusual solution, however, was the Waterwheel mode, where tiles with arrows appeared on the board. Matching these would rotate the entire layout, drastically changing the game situation and forcing one to look at the remaining tiles differently.

Finding reviews for this game today is extremely difficult, but from memory, one can easily reconstruct the range of opinions that floated around on the gaming forums. Fans of simple and meditative pastimes were surely delighted. They praised the game for its calm atmosphere, pleasant graphics, and the fact that it required no mental strain. For them, it was the perfect product: “start, relax, quit.” On the other hand, there were players who spoke of the game coolly. In their eyes, it looked “pretty, but empty,” and the lack of a goal beyond clearing the board made the gameplay monotonous. Nevertheless, even the harshest critics noted the “Waterwheel” mode as a fresh and interesting idea that somehow made the game stand out from the dozens of faceless clones.

My Verdict

Mahjong Garden To Go is a stress-relief pill of a game. It honestly fulfills its one and only function: to help you relax. It won’t challenge you or give you a storm of emotions, but it will serve as perfect background entertainment. The presence of three different modes, especially the original “Waterwheel,” is its main and, perhaps, only significant advantage over hundreds of similar titles. If you’re looking for a simple and charming solitaire game to pass the time in a queue or during a lunch break, this game will not disappoint you. But if you expect any depth from a game, there’s nothing for you here.
