Mahjong World by Oberon Media is a workhorse project. It didn’t try to surprise the player with innovations or a touching story, but instead methodically did what it did best – give the player a lot, and I mean a lot, of quality mahjong solitaire. This was one of those cases where the game’s main virtue wasn’t some unique feature, but its reliability and colossal volume.

At its core, it was as classic as mahjong could get: find a pair, clear it from the board. The developers’ entire focus was on content and customization. Players were offered a gigantic number of layouts for that time – over 500 which guaranteed dozens of hours of gameplay. You could also customize the look and feel by choosing from a variety of different tile sets and background images. Yes, the game mentioned the ability to compete with other players, but this was just a standard high-score table, not full-fledged multiplayer. The main thing was still the meditative process of clearing the tile pyramids.

Back in its day, players on the forums reacted to the game exactly as it deserved – without wild enthusiasm, but with a great deal of respect. No one called it a breakthrough, but everyone unanimously praised it for its “honesty” and incredible amount of content. This was that “just a good mahjong game” that you could always fire up and be sure you still had a couple hundred un-played levels in reserve. It wasn’t discussed as feverishly as the story-driven hits, but it was consistently recommended to anyone who asked, “Can you recommend a regular mahjong game, but one that will last a long time?”

My Verdict

Mahjong World is not a delicacy, but a huge bag of quality grain. It’s the perfect game for purists, for those who love mahjong in its pristine form and don’t want to be distracted by extra elements. If you don’t need stories and unique modes, but just one thing a reliable and virtually endless solitaire game then this game was and remains one of the best in its class. It just does its job, and it does it well.
