Against the backdrop of many games that used popular Asian or resort themes, Mahjongg: Ancient Mayas tried to stand out by immersing players in the world of one of history’s most mysterious civilizations. The game offered players the chance to become an explorer, venturing into the jungle in search of mysterious temples and forgotten treasures.

The game offered players two standard modes for the genre. The first was “Adventure,” where you had to progress through levels sequentially, following a simple plot about uncovering the secrets of the ancient culture. The second was a classic mode with free play, where you could choose any available layout. In essence, it was a completely ordinary mahjong solitaire, its only distinguishing feature being the theme itself and the wide variety of tiles designed in the Mayan style.

It’s safe to say that the game went completely unnoticed by the gaming community. It was a typical, forgettable project that evoked neither positive nor negative emotions. It offered players nothing new or interesting other than the setting itself. Presumably, the game was only purchased by those who really liked the theme of ancient civilizations, but even they found no reason to discuss it.

My Verdict

Mahjongg: Ancient Mayas is a game whose entire potential begins and ends with its title. Behind the interesting and fresh theme lies an absolutely standard and unremarkable mahjong solitaire. It has not a single unique mechanic or memorable detail. It is a competently made, but completely soulless product that does not deserve your attention, unless you are the most dedicated fan of Mayan culture.
